Juicy! Interviews: Sinden, Dillon Francis & Judge Jules

 

It's been a mentally busy week here at Juicy! we've had interviews with some of the biggest names in the industry, we've chilled, partied and met the likes of Diplo and as per usual revision has been sacraficed. Just to pre-warn you lot this blog will go a bit quiet in the coming weeks as we stumble through our exams.  

But enough, let's crack on with the important stuff... 

 

Last night (5th May) saw the people behind the Red Bull Music Academy bring an absolutely storming line-up to Edinburgh's Liquid Rooms. Major Lazer and Mad Decent co-founder Diplo headlined with support coming from Mega Mega Mega player and Kiss FM broadcaster Sinden as well as LA based moombathon champion Dillon Francis.  

Dillon kicked off proceedings, simmering at 110bpm, getting the groove going in a way only moombathon can. Quick note, Dillon opened with a tune that sent me absolutely wild, Nero - Me & You (Danger Remix), Kit posted it ages ago and it's the best nero remix out there. Sinden & Diplo rocked up about 12 just in time for the start of Sinden's set. 

As expected he brought the crowd up another couple of notches in his trademark style that has gained him so much attention on Kiss FM. For me, The Count & Sinden's 'Panther' was a real stand out tune in his set and the crowd reacted in a similarly animalistic way. After Sinden, Diplo took to the decks. 

I don't like to gush but that man has some mad skills. What really impressed me was how he kept the crowd guessing, he'd be hammering some really underground primitive dutch whilst teasing in Lil' Wayne's 'A Milli', of what i saw of his set my favourite bit was when he mixed in Missy Elliot's old school classic 'Get Your Freak On' into Afrojack's mix of Pon De Floor. Wild.  

After Sinden's set, the carnage began. What was supposed to be a calm, serious 10:30pm chat with Sinden turned into drunken 2am patter with not only Sinden but Dillon Francis, Clouds, their tour manager and the lovely people behind Red Bull Music.  

It was fairly wild and we found some interesting stuff but i don't want to spoil the interview...

Moving on to our shenanegans in the day on thursday when we got the pleasure of a phone interview with none other than Judge Jules. 


Whilst he's not really our genre, it was amazing to interrogate a DJ, broadcaster and producer who's been smashing the scene for so many years now, he's doing his 12th year of residencies at Eden, few can make a more impressive claim than that. 


I don't know what it is but we always get some interesting results from our interviews, prepare to hear about how he goes about searching for new music, why he feels like a door-to-door salesman, having Pippa Midleton & Prince Harry on the decks, why he'd like to chill with Mario Ballotelli & the Dalai Lama and why his ideal night out would include sipping snakebite on a park bench.

Liquid D'n'B - Wreckage Machinery

 

There's just about enough time today for yet another blogpost, don't know what it is but we're firing them out at the mo. Anyway, I'm taking a little detour from the musical niche we are slotting ourselves into to bring you something a bit special... 

This is Vienna based Liquid D'n'B artist Wreckage Machinery. He has produced a solid stream of releases for a few years now but it was his remix of 'My Soul' by Zoom that really caught my eye. Although he does produce more brutal tunes now and then, he really finds his stride when combining the ambient soundscape-esque elements with striking piano progressions and the classic skipping percussion. And as a bonus he hammers the sub-bass so when you crank it up on a good system it sound sabsolutley lush.

Soundcloud Update: Tunes, Mixes & More

First of all apologies for neglecting Juicy!'s Soundcloud Sundays for the past two weeks, i can assure you this was not intentional as two weeks ago we were wrapped up in finishing our promo mix and this sunday just gone we were hammering the interviews at Heavy Gossip & Musika's Day Of Rest. It will be back this sunday however!

Naturally, Soundcloud has been spewing out more content than the female population of newastle on a saturday night and after sifting through it, i've found some absolute gems i wanted to share with y'all...

First up, the group VillA (no, that's not a typo) of whom we at Juicy! are massive fans do monthly mixes. Reaching almost 1000 plays in a day is testament to just how good their tune selection and mixing is.

The stand out tune for me in this mix is Todd Terje's new banger 'Ragysh'...

Second is track that lasts barely a minute but it's the one i was second most buzzed to find. Tensnake released this snippet, not sure what it's from, maybe a new single? maybe gauging people's reactions to an idea? Whatever it turns out to be it carries the undeniable old-school laced disco that has become his hallmark. Super exited to see what this turns into...

Finally, to crown this Juicy! Soundcloud update we have the latest April 2011 Mix from none-other than Disco-don Vito, masquerading as Aeroplane.

I don't usually have much to say about the artists themselves but i really don't think Vito has the right to call himself Aeroplane. Not gonna lie, i love all the stuff he produces solo now aswell as back in the glory days of Aeroplane when it was Vito and Stefano, now The Magician. After they split, both their styles changed somewhat and only The Magician had the courage to re-brand the style of music he was creating. From what i've seen Vito is still riding the wave of popularity created during his partnership with Stefano albeit with a new sound. It almost feels as if Stefano has been shortchanged in this scenario and i don't like that because he's a fucking gent. Find out why here.

James Blakes melodic, experimental, bass smash 'Limit To Your Love' has been given the treatment by Lynx, making it a liquid drum 'n' bass monster. The increased speed costs the song some of its subtlety but its more than made up for by the phenomenal sub-bass and piano, get this in your library regardless of whether you're a d'n'b fan.

I know this is the second in succession, but I'm on a roll tonight, digging the depths for new beats. Until about 3 weeks ago I hadn't heard of Guti, since then he has blown me away with his quality. I was introduced to him by his collaboration with Dubshape which Pete Tong featured on his disc of his Future Underground compilation with Riva Starr. If that wasn't high enough praise, The 2 Bears then spun it on their show on Ministry of Sound entitled Follow The Bears, which I highly recommend you check out.

Jamie Jones - Celebrating 6000 hits in style.

Firstly I'd like to thank each and everyone of you from the UK to Ukraine (we're worldwide now) for taking us to 6,000 hits, hopefully it's a continuing upward trend as the Juicy! blog brings you more of the freshest beats, mixes, clubbing news and interviews.

Secondly the Juicy! show will be airing this Friday, fresh from interviewing Sinden the previous day. We will be playing out the interview on air as well as banging out some of our biggest tunes and going in the mix live on air for the first time this year, giving you a taster of what we think is going to be filling the clubs this year, if our promo mixes weren't enough for you.

Day Of Rest Review, Riva Starr & The Magician Interview

On Sunday 1st May, two of Edinburgh's biggest house nights combined forces to produce 11 hours of music spread across 3 different rooms. We got the absolute pleasure of being able to interview not only house music don Riva Starr but also disco mafioso The Magician, both were really top guys and the interviews turned out suprisingly well! But before them, i'm going to do a cheeky review of the whole day...


With the doors opening at 2pm, Heavy Gossip and Musika's day of rest was always going to be a marathon session of sun, house music and to my suprise, loads of hot girls (must be the house music). Just before his set at 6pm (he had to go on earlier because he was playing his Snatch! night in london which was a shame). It was weird, i walked into the office to find of the biggest names in dance just finishing a drum arrangement on his new remix which featured a 1970's cartoon cat singing about marijuana.


And this is the interview I, and then Jack later, did with Riva Starr...

Safe to say his set delivered, it was truly a lesson in how to DJ, build up a crowd and keep the energy going for 2 hours. it was strange to see that he had literally everyone in the room up on the floor going wild. 


After Riva finished, Jordan Cochrane & Lawrence Nolan took over and kept the groove going. We went to catch 30 minutes of Retro/Grade's set downstairs before heading to the office again to set up for The Magician's Interview. 


He arrived dressed in a full suit carrying a wand with The Magician engraved down the side, we didn't know what we had let ourselves in for. Turns out he was an absolute gent, really open about all our questions and didn't mind wasting his time chatting to a duo of wanna be DJs!

After the interview, we went to the the basement for his set and what would turn out to be the highlight of the evening. It is completley clichéd but i mean this in all seriousness, it was one of the best sets i've ever been at. Not only did he play some of the most underground yet ridiculousy funky disco i'll probably ever here, he had everyone going wild for the full 2 hours of his set. It was also really refreshing to step back from] 128bpm house and submerse into old school styled 120bpm disco. A few of the songs i did recognise were...

Basically, it was fucking class.

Juicy! Loves............ The 2 Bears.

To celebrate the fact that the 2 Bears mixed one half of the brand new Southern Fried & Tested compilation (number 3) I decided to dedicate a blog post to the furry duo. The 2 Bears consist of Raf Rundell and ex-Hot Chip frontman Joe Goddard and are now creating music influenced by everything from Detroit techno to reggae. Their original productions are widely supported by everyone from Annie Mac to Seth Troxler and they hold a weekly radio show on Ministry of Sound entitled Follow The Bears.

They are releasing a new 4 track EP entitled Bearhug on June 20th to back up previous releases Follow the Bear and Curious Nature, both of which came with fantastic remix packages.

Juicy! Summer 2011 Promo Mix

Here it is, probably one of the most important blog posts that we're going to be doing this year, our first proper promo mix as the Juicy! DJs.

The demo is split into 2 parts, the first part was mixed by Jack, a more laidback section, featuring gorgeous disco from the likes of Villa, Tensnake and Aeroplane, mellow house and techno from the likes Soul Clap, Round Table Knights and Nalin & Kane and finishing on a storming remix of Swoon by the masters that are Lindstrom & Prins Thomas.

The second part, mixed by me is a lot more upbeat, massive tech bangers from the likes of Johan Dresser, Joris Voorn, NiCe 7, Adam Port & Riva Starr before moving into funky electro from Style Of Eye, Evil Nine, La Zebra & Surkin.

But before we get to the mixes i just want to mention Saturday just past when, as the Juicy! DJs we played 12-1 before Alex Metric at The Liquid Rooms.

It. Was. Insane.

Not only did we warm up, we played 2:30 - 3 as well when Metric finished. I've honestly never seen a crowd go that wild in a long time also, Metric was also an absolute gent.

Next up is something a bit different. 'Reflection' is half ambient soundscape and half minimal D'n'B. The breakdown and subsequent build up are amazing and you're really caught off guard when the subbass comes back in, phenomenal.

I was searching for the magnificent Jamie Jones on the remix of Azari & iii's new tune Hungry For The Power and I came across this fantastic mix, by Bxentric, tunes from such talents as Essential Mixers Retro/Grade, house legends the Juan Maclean and the man himself, Jamie Jones, check it out for an hour of the most upfront and gorgeous disco house vibes, beautiful.

A Cheeky Few Bootlegs!

I haven't posted anything in a while and for good reason, I've spent the past 3 weeks cooped up in my bedroom with Ableton at my side, hastily preparing for Uber's official after party for Radio 1's Big Weekend in my hometown Carlisle. Pete Tong & Riva Starr - Future Underground (2011)

It's been an absolutely massive week for Juicy, firstly, if all goes well i've bagged us an interview with Kissy Sell Out, Judge Jules, Bart B More and Sinden and secondly, this mammoth mix CD has dropped.

This is pretty much the pinnacle of modern day house music. Two absolute titans have joined forces to give you 2CD's of the freshest and best cuts out there, haven't looked forward to something like this since Toolroom Miami 2011. Juicy Loves...... Chilly Gonzales

Chilly Gonzales - pianist, film producer, part time rapper, musical god, whatever he does he is incredible at it and he's recently released his album 'Ivory Tower" so I thought I"d dedicate some blog space to him.

If you've ever listened to one of our Juicy! Shows you'll have probably heard a Round Table Knights tune or we'll have talked about how amazing they are. So you'll understand how exited we got when they released their debut album 'Say What?!' on Made To Play.

Juicy's Soundcloud Sundays #3

This is the third installment of my favourite Juicy feature to date where i trawl the audio goldmine that is soundcloud and report back with the 5 top tunes that have kept me dancing all week long...

#5 Laidjack - My Forbidden Lover (Laidjack Edit For Lovers)
Straight in with some serious old school 110bpm vibes this week. Laidjack updates a disco classic, perfect for mellowing out in the sun. I've never really heard of this guy before but from his soundcloud page he's combining the genres of disco and deep house really well to create something truly unique. Check him out.

#4 Dillon Francis - Beautician
At number 4 is a melodic slice of dubstep from up and coming producer Dillon Francis. Bu mashing together the heavier elements of artists like Doctor P and Flux Pavillion with quite melodic magneticman-esque electronic synthlines he breathes a breath of fresh air into the ailing genre of dubstep that's all beginning to sound the same. Also he's supporting Diplo and Sinden at the Liquid Rooms on May 5th. Gonna be larrge!

#3 Ghetto Funk - Been Real
Next is an electro/breaks croos over tune from Ghetto Funk. Not quite sure if Ghetto Funk is a label or an artist, all i know is that everything they're putting up on soundcloud is killing it! It uses the same old school sample from Avicii's 'My Feelings For You' but they put it to far better use than the swede! Mixing a big bassline with carnival style drums and a great vocal sample make this a true funky banger. Really can't wait to get my hands on this!

#2 Voltron - Don't Stop (XXXY Remix)
This man is truly killing it at the moment, the first act to be featured 2 weeks in a row on our Soundcloud Sundays feature! And if you listen to his tracks it really is for good reason. This time he takes the tempo up a bit and almost begins to explore MJ Cole style garage vibes whilst maintaining his impossibly funky trademark beats. If the first minute or so doesn't do it for you, fast forward to the second drop, simply superb, can't wait to see him live.

#1 La Zebra - Piano Dancin
The top spot this week goes to LA based producer La Zebra and his awesome tune Piano Dancin. He crafts the entire main melody from old piano samples and its awesome! The sheer level of funk that exudes from it is amazing and no doubt it would have any dancefloor going within seconds, deserved winner!

Kit McBride's Promo Mix 2011!

I've never got round to recording a promo mix before, partly because I could never bring myself to choose between songs but with the opening of two new clubs in the Carlisle area, I thought I best pull my finger out and get something recorded!

I've fired together a collection of tunes I've been playing out quite a bit recently with a few of my own edits thrown in, switching from club bangers, to rock anthems, to dutch house, it's got a bit of everything (including Dire Straits!).

#5 Sr. De Funk & Quincy Jointz - Tonight (Telephunken Remix)
This style of old-skool rap-esque funk infused with modern electro basslines seems to be getting bigger and bigger theses days (Think they're calling it Nu Funk?). Krafty Kuts (tune from him coming below) has been hammering this style for years now and it's prime for getting the dancefloors booming.

#4 Count & Sinden - Desert Rhythm (xxxy Remix)
Sheer carnival vibes from xxxy here, house tempo with the off beat snares give it a really funky edge. Only thing is i think a good brazillian/latino vocalist over the top would absolutely set this tune off.

#3 Krafty Kuts Feat. Futurecast - Insane Bangers Vol. 11

#2 Tonic & Audiobot - Happy Feet
This tune is right up here because of how completely off guard it took me. Starts out with a fairly good bouncing balkan beat and the build up continues in the same way, cuts out then... BOOM! You get hit by a massive dirty dutch beat over which he starts to layer the balkan sample again. It's awesome! and a free download...

#1 Jess Mills - Vultures (MJ Cole Remix)
Not gonna lie, the top spot this week was a fairly easy choice as soon as i heard a preview of MJ Coles new remix. The original tune, being produced by breakage was already steeped in production pedigree but MJ Cole has taken it to another level. Having perfected the 2-step style, it clashed beautifully with the chilled vibes from Jess Mills. Can't wait to get the full version on some decent speakers and mellow out to the sub bass! GO GO GO!

Feels like we've been neglecting techno as a genre on here for a while and theres loads of quality stuff surfacing at the minute so here we go:-

Tom Flynn - Bianca released on Steve Angello's Size label, Tom Flynn was rated by Pete Tong as his upcoming producer of 2010, heavy praise and he doesn't dissapoint, not strictly techno but still unbeleivable.

And finally I'll leave you with a tune that everyone is waiting for to drop, the heavyweight duo of Art Department and Seth Troxler, a techno match up that cannot be rivalled, with their new tune Living the Life. Look out for more collaborations between the two as well as an appearance from the magnificent Soul Clap on the upcoming Art Department album, well worth a look.
