We're sitting in the Red Bull studios waiting to interview Toddla T and Clouds about their forthcoming collaboration for Red Bull's Mixtape, but before that drops we've got a massive treat, brand new Aeroplane material! The new EP My Enemy accompanies this months mixtape, which features a track from Edinburgh talent 6th Borough Project. Remixes courtesy of techno don Green Velvet and Aeroplane favourite Rex The Dog, check them out:-
1. ESG - What she came for 2. Michael King - Plum Bobb 3. Microsolco - A lion love 4. Hot Toddy & Danielle Moore - Won't let go 5. Heiko Laux & Teo Schulte - Sound hug ( Daniel Bortz remix ) 6. Silver Disco - Rock on 7. 6th Borough Project - Sometimes the fool 8. Mitzi - All I heard ( Bonar Bradberry remix ) 9. Electric City - Electric City All Night ( Kolombo remix ) 10. Tad Wily - Lonely night 11. Chris Malinchak - The fourth 12. Munk - La musica ( DJ Steef bootleg remix )
Us here at Juicy! absolutley love the two dance music heroes Pete Tong & Annie Mac and their shows for the best forward thinking tunes out there. Both shows last friday were phenomenal and i thought you lot deserved to hear the best bits...
She moved onto Tinie Tempah's new tune 'Look At Me Now' and i don't like to say but i'm loving his new darker direction...
Also she was loving a garage Mini Mix done by DJ Q which included Zed Bias who we've been raving about how good he is for a while now. This just proves Juicy! is one step ahead of the game!
Tongy brought the madness with his trademark style of house. He played Maya Jane Coles' new release 'High Life'. Such a great chilled tune, can't wait to see her smash it at exit festival over the summer... Maya Jane Coles - The High Life by 2020VisionRecordings
Next he played a tune which really got me in the mood to hammer it this weekend. Arno Cost's new athemic summer banger 'Lise'...
We've both finished for summer now and are contemplating a hazy 3 months of sessioning, DJing and generally enjoying ourselves and as if to celebrate the fact, Tim Green's brand new remix dropped onto the web. I've been a massive fan since Old Sunshine and his quite simply phenomenal remix of Cassius's 99, the tune of last summer without a doubt.
If you're about on Saturday drop down to Hawke & Hunter to see us warming up at Edinburgh House establishment Heavy Gossip and then catch us the next day at the Edinburgh Rocks Afterparty.
Plus stick around for news and reviews of our day at the Red Bull studios on Monday, with Toddla T & Clouds, more info on that over the coming days.
Bonus:- I thought Jamie Jones's remix was unbeatable but apparently not, check this amazing remix by Art Department, featured in Edinburgh DJ Laurence Nolan's recent mix for SHA which I highly recommend you listen to.
I dunno what it is but i always seem to fuck up when we're getting our photo taken with a big name! Anyway last night Hospital records invaded Edinburgh's Liquid Rooms with heavyweights Danny Byrd, Cyantific, Logistics, MC Darrison & MC Risky. It was a fitting post exams blow out, i've not seen a place go as nuts as that for a long time!
Danny Byrd was kind enough to let us interview him after his set, unfortunatley we couldn't use Liquid Rooms' office so we found a nice damp urine riddled step across the street from the club, classy. However we did get a class interview, we got Danny's opinions on subjects like his production influences, his plans for the summer, the advantages of a slap head over a full head of hair, the chuckle brothers and old bosses that have sacked him!
Exams are over, we're seeing and interviewing Danny tonight and i'm doing nothing for the next 4 months untill we start back at Uni. What a buzz. Even better is the fact that two bassline heros have collaborated, Nero & Sub Focus have combined to give us 'Promises' their new single
Anyone who does anything close to frequenting this blog will know how much me and Ian love Riva Starr and his label Snatch! which releases some of the most upbeat, party orientated house around. We recently interviewed him at Day Of Rest (listen here) and he told us about a new E.P based on a cartoon about a cat smoking Josefs and he's just released a minimix of the 3 tracks on Soundcloud:-
The second track, Mucho Gusto, is literally the best thing I've heard so far this year, as soon as I can get my hands on a download I can see it becoming a staple in my sets for months, if not years, to come, huuugee tune!
So i'm down to my last exam and i'm absolutely buzzed to finish. Just a quick post today to share with you lot two tracks that have hauled me through brutal hours of revision.
I don't know much about this group Clockwork except they're italian, playing at Treehouse in Manchester very soon and they make awesome tunes.
This one's my favourite, plenty of funky chugging bass with ghostly vocals make a stormer of a tune. It's been released on Hot Creations, the same forward thinking label that snapped up the massive 'Forward Thinking' by Not Natured.
Don't have a link for this tune but the 'Lee Foss meets Robert James in the Art Department Remix' is really good, deffinetly the vibe that's getting loads of attention at the moment.
Ed Banger have been on phenomenal form recently, with the release of their 'Bee Sides' compilation, 'Let The Children Techno' and the forthcoming albums from Justice and SebastiAn and the hits keep on coming........
The fantastic news that Carte Blanche are continuing to collaborate despite only setting out as a short lived side project has been compounded by the release of a new mix featuring new Carte Blanche material, alongside tunes from masters such as Thomas Bangalter, Chromeo, Azari & III and Drop The Lime.
The mix opens on one of my current favourites, the piano-laden 'Jack On The Moon' and ends on the forthcoming Carte Blanche single 'With You' featuring Hot Chip on vocals, big look! you need to make time in your life to give this a listen, these boys are siiickkk!
Marble Players - Playground Expect big things from the Marble Players, formed from the now deceased Institubes label, these guys are putting out some seriously good house music, as you'd expect with Surkin and Bobmo involved!
Wow. It's a surefire way to determine when summer is just round the corner when the big labels starting pumping out summer 2011 compilations. Judging by how amazing Toolroom Miami was, bringing us tunes like 'Groove Amigos - 123XYZ' 'Kids - Stefano Noferini' 'Beat Me Bacl - Supernova' and 'Marsch Marsch - Thomas Gold', Toolroom Ibiza has no option but to raise Toolroom's game once more and lucky for us lot, they've started spraying previews up onto soundcloud. I really cannot wait for the release, Toolroom Miami tunes were pretty much the backbone of my sets for about 6 months. These two are my favourites from it so far and below is the soundcloud set so you can listen to them all.
Summer is so so nearly here and after Ian's last post about Joy O. I though I'd take the chance to get excited about some of the talent hitting the clubs (and Gardens) over the next few weeks, which is all thats getting me through days of poring over Medical notes.
27/5 - WEOWN - Reaching no.2 in Mixmags monthly parties with their most recent offering WeOwn are bringing Dubstep heavyweights Skream & Benga to Ocean Terminal, ably supported by Skepta and rising star T.E.E.D along with some of their more familiar residents, One Dollar Dave and his side project Discopolis (recently announced for Rockness). These boys know how to throw a party, as anyone who witnessed Afrojack and Pete Tong will testify to, if you're a fan of your banging basslines this is one for you!
Pro. Green - Monster (T.E.E.D remix) - Fantastic remix of lyrical master Pro. Green, will go offfff in Ocean Terminal.
- 27/5 - Joy Orbison at CabVol. If you're into your more underground beats then Joy O is the one for you, Ian's already blogged about him, waxing lyrical so I won't go on for too long, but this guy has skiiiillllssss, he's making some of the most forward thinking music out there, he's not just riding the crest of Nu-bass, he's creating it! Support from Vincent Vega (Fuse), also known as Stu Todd and Gus Armstrong, two excellent DJs, promoters and all round top blokes!
28/5 - Maurice Fulton @ Heavy Gossip Relaunch (Hawke & Hunter) - Juicy! DJs on the decks.
The next day the session continues with legendary house night Heavy Gossip's relocation to Hawke & Hunter and I have the pleasure of being on warm-up duties. They're bringing techno officionado Maurice Fulton in to cut the ribbon and maybe even play a few tunes, this will be a massive night so all you techno & house heads get down, this is not to be missed!
29/5 - Princes Street Gardens with Arno Cost, Joey Negro & Dirty Vegas.
The Studiopunks, who have previously put on the now legendary Edinburgh Rocks party's, have delivered one of the finest lineups seen in Edinburgh for a long time, with an all day party in the very scenic Princes Street Gardens and an afterparty at a soon to be announced venue with me and Ian on the decks, amongst others. This will be the perfect way to see out the May Bank Holiday and they've put together a free mix in preparation of the event just to whet appetites, have a listen to get you in the mood for a day not to be missed.
Thats all for now, stick about for more news from Juicy! over the coming months as we gear up for our assault on the Student Radio Awards as well as all our DJing exploits over the summer and some prime tunes that we're loving.
Edinburghians, we've got some crracking news for all of you that are floating around on the 27th of May. The legendary Sugarbeat club night, recently entering it's 7th year, who also let Jack spin at their last event are bringing one of London's finest crossover talents, Joy Orbison.
Wikipedia describes his style as 'a coalescence of dubstep, uk funky, uk garage and house, that's probably the closest you're going to get to his eclectic trademark grooves that have gained him shitloads of attention. He exploded in 2009 after the release of his amazing single 'Hyph Mngo' on Hotflush and now he's back with his new ep, only thing is he's changed his name to Joy O. Sugarbeat with him on the 1's & 2's will be a sick night!
It's been a crazy few days for me & Jack, first up on Thursday was a cheeky trip to carlisle to smash the BBC Introducing party at concrete then Saturday saw Musika bring welsh house legend Jamie Jones to tear up liquid rooms.
Thursday night was always going to be absolutley rammed, you can't exactly go wrong with a free party, 2 days before the biggest free ticketed music festival in europe, on the busiest student night in Carlisle, being headlined by 1Xtra's DJ Target.
Newcastle's Ape-X resident and founder Johnny Patrickson got the night going with some lush tech and deep house before Glover upped the tempo and delivered an hour of dirty dub and garage.
11pm saw me & Jack take to the decks to what would turn out to be one of the funnest, sweatiest sets we've played. Music wise we kept it upbeat and funky, which kept heads on the floor and feet grooving. But the pinnacle of the evening was (admittedly) a good shout by Jack and we finished on Mark Knight's storming remix/edit/mashup of Florence And The Machine and an old school disco track i can't quite remember the name of, it went down an absolute treat. It was an absolutely class night, can't wait to smash it down there again.
Saturday night saw Edinburgh's biggest house night Musika present a producer who is dominating the house and techno scene at the moment, Jamie Jones.
Not gonna lie, I love nights like these, it's the only chance regular punters get the chance to hear some of the most underground/forward thinking music out there and Jamie Jones didn't dissapoint, I really don't know why more people don't get more involved. Plus you always know it's been a good night when you only recognise 2 tunes from a 2 and a half hour set.
Top night and i can't wait to see who else Musika are bringing to tear liquid apart. Here are the (only) two tunes we recognised from last night...
Thought we'd start compiling a chart for each month as we go through, just to wrap things up and give you access to what we think are the ten biggest tracks out there. We're going to do a joint one each month but as this is the first time, we thought we'd do individual ones just to double the fun!
We're probably going to move it to Resident Advisor at some point, then forward it to the blog, but for the minute it's just an unofficial blog-post, so give us any feedback or hit us up with your charts on justtoojuicy@hotmail.com or on twitter/justtoojuicy.
Obviously our tastes are very ecclectic and that'll be represented in here, the tracks may not necessarily have been released in the month of the chart but if we've discovered or loved them then, then that's where we'll put them. This month has seen the release of Pete Tong & Riva Starrs Future Underground as well as hype over the new 2 Bears EP, Bear Hug. We've also seen Seth Troxler, Riva Starr and Funkagenda in the Essential Mix and been to see Alex Metric, Jaymo & Andy George, Boy-8-Bit, Diplo, Sinden, Riva Starr and The Magician meaning that house has featured heavily this month, which I'm sure you will be able to tell.
Here we go.....
1. Joey Negro & Gramophonedzie - No Sugar [Z Records]
2. 2 Bears - Be Strong [Southern Fried Records]
3. Julio Bashmore - Battle For The Middle You [PMR Records] - slow on the uptake of this, absolute monster!
Here at the Juicy! blog we like to keep you up to date with all our goings on and this one is a bit special. Some of you might know i'm originally from Carlisle, i love the place but there's never much going on untill Radio 1 announced they were bringing the cream of modern music's crop of talent to an airfield 5 mins from my house.
But that isn't the best bit.
Throughout the week leading up to it, loads of R1 DJs are living in and around carlisle and they're throwing a series of free parties to mark the occasion. The one everyone want to go to is on thursday night at Concrete, free party, first come first served. It's gonna be ram-jammed. I've been asked to play, not sure of the set time quite yet but Jack's heading down with me as well.
Guaranteed to be an absolutely wild night so get down early.
Naturally we can't leave you without any tunes so here's a delicious lil' remix...
Rising star Deadboy recently produced a sublime mix for the XLR8R podcast, featuring his forthcoming single 'Here 4 U' which I cannot wait to get my hands on and tunes from Juicy! favourites xxxy and Wookie. We're absolutely loving this emerging future bass/garage genre at Juicy! and this mix shows exactly why:-
01 Wookie "Down On Me" (Manchu) 02 Donga & Blake "Detroitus" (Well Rounded) 03 Groove Chronicles "Shattered" (Groove Chronicles) 04 C.R.S.T "Need You" (Well Rounded) 05 Velour "She Wore Velour" 06 Hackman "Blacksnake" (Well Rounded) 07 Soule:Power "Lost (Bakongo Remix)" (DVA) 08 Skinnz "I Know" (Well Rounded) 09 Andy Bell "Call On Me (Deadboy Remix)" (Mute) 10 xxxy "I Can’t Stop" 11 Destiny’s Child "Bills Bills Bills (Harmonimix)" (white) 12 Todd Edwards "I Might Be (Joy Orbison Remix)" (Scion A/V) 13 Basic Channel "Phylypstrak II" (Basic Channel) 14 Gongon "I Could Be There" (Well Rounded) 15 D-Malice "Full Effect" (white) 16 Deadboy "Here 4 U" (Numbers) 17 Andrea "You Still Got Me" (Daphne) 18 M&M "I Feel This Way (Remix)" (Suburban Base)
The first Deadboy tune I heard was in Zinc's crack house mix for Mixmag, which was well before the garage revival and at the time I didn't quite know what to make of it, but since then I've grown to love it,
It's been a mentally busy week here at Juicy! we've had interviews with some of the biggest names in the industry, we've chilled, partied and met the likes of Diplo and as per usual revision has been sacraficed. Just to pre-warn you lot this blog will go a bit quiet in the coming weeks as we stumble through our exams.
But enough, let's crack on with the important stuff...
Last night (5th May) saw the people behind the Red Bull Music Academy bring an absolutely storming line-up to Edinburgh's Liquid Rooms. Major Lazer and Mad Decent co-founder Diplo headlined with support coming from Mega Mega Mega player and Kiss FM broadcaster Sinden as well as LA based moombathon champion Dillon Francis.
Dillon kicked off proceedings, simmering at 110bpm, getting the groove going in a way only moombathon can. Quick note, Dillon opened with a tune that sent me absolutely wild, Nero - Me & You (Danger Remix), Kit posted it ages ago and it's the best nero remix out there. Sinden & Diplo rocked up about 12 just in time for the start of Sinden's set.
As expected he brought the crowd up another couple of notches in his trademark style that has gained him so much attention on Kiss FM. For me, The Count & Sinden's 'Panther' was a real stand out tune in his set and the crowd reacted in a similarly animalistic way. After Sinden, Diplo took to the decks.
I don't like to gush but that man has some mad skills. What really impressed me was how he kept the crowd guessing, he'd be hammering some really underground primitive dutch whilst teasing in Lil' Wayne's 'A Milli', of what i saw of his set my favourite bit was when he mixed in Missy Elliot's old school classic 'Get Your Freak On' into Afrojack's mix of Pon De Floor. Wild.
After Sinden's set, the carnage began. What was supposed to be a calm, serious 10:30pm chat with Sinden turned into drunken 2am patter with not only Sinden but Dillon Francis, Clouds, their tour manager and the lovely people behind Red Bull Music.
It was fairly wild and we found some interesting stuff but i don't want to spoil the interview...
Moving on to our shenanegans in the day on thursday when we got the pleasure of a phone interview with none other than Judge Jules.
Whilst he's not really our genre, it was amazing to interrogate a DJ, broadcaster and producer who's been smashing the scene for so many years now, he's doing his 12th year of residencies at Eden, few can make a more impressive claim than that.
I don't know what it is but we always get some interesting results from our interviews, prepare to hear about how he goes about searching for new music, why he feels like a door-to-door salesman, having Pippa Midleton & Prince Harry on the decks, why he'd like to chill with Mario Ballotelli & the Dalai Lama and why his ideal night out would include sipping snakebite on a park bench.
Find out more about Judge Jules and his legendary Ibiza residencies here... judgementsundays.co.uk/
Massive thanks to Judge Jules, Diplo, Sinden, Dillon Francis, everyone from Red Bull Music and all the management who made these interview possible, they were deffinetley worth all the effort!
As anyone who checks this blog or listens in on FreshAir, me and Ian love Evil Nine, so when I heard that they had set up their own label, I was beside myself with excitement.
They don't appear to have signed anyone, but hang around for them to start, I have no doubt that whoever they get will be huuuuge, they have never failed to deliver in the past.
But to keep you going, here's their forthcoming single,
There's just about enough time today for yet another blogpost, don't know what it is but we're firing them out at the mo. Anyway, I'm taking a little detour from the musical niche we are slotting ourselves into to bring you something a bit special...
This is Vienna based Liquid D'n'B artist Wreckage Machinery. He has produced a solid stream of releases for a few years now but it was his remix of 'My Soul' by Zoom that really caught my eye. Although he does produce more brutal tunes now and then, he really finds his stride when combining the ambient soundscape-esque elements with striking piano progressions and the classic skipping percussion. And as a bonus he hammers the sub-bass so when you crank it up on a good system it sound sabsolutley lush.
First of all apologies for neglecting Juicy!'s Soundcloud Sundays for the past two weeks, i can assure you this was not intentional as two weeks ago we were wrapped up in finishing our promo mix and this sunday just gone we were hammering the interviews at Heavy Gossip & Musika's Day Of Rest. It will be back this sunday however!
Naturally, Soundcloud has been spewing out more content than the female population of newastle on a saturday night and after sifting through it, i've found some absolute gems i wanted to share with y'all...
First up, the group VillA (no, that's not a typo) of whom we at Juicy! are massive fans do monthly mixes. Reaching almost 1000 plays in a day is testament to just how good their tune selection and mixing is. VillA 'in the mix' May 2011 by VILLA Soundcloud
The stand out tune for me in this mix is Todd Terje's new banger 'Ragysh'...
Second is track that lasts barely a minute but it's the one i was second most buzzed to find. Tensnake released this snippet, not sure what it's from, maybe a new single? maybe gauging people's reactions to an idea? Whatever it turns out to be it carries the undeniable old-school laced disco that has become his hallmark. Super exited to see what this turns into... You Know I Know It (Snippet) by Tensnake
Finally, to crown this Juicy! Soundcloud update we have the latest April 2011 Mix from none-other than Disco-don Vito, masquerading as Aeroplane.
I don't usually have much to say about the artists themselves but i really don't think Vito has the right to call himself Aeroplane. Not gonna lie, i love all the stuff he produces solo now aswell as back in the glory days of Aeroplane when it was Vito and Stefano, now The Magician. After they split, both their styles changed somewhat and only The Magician had the courage to re-brand the style of music he was creating. From what i've seen Vito is still riding the wave of popularity created during his partnership with Stefano albeit with a new sound. It almost feels as if Stefano has been shortchanged in this scenario and i don't like that because he's a fucking gent. Find out why here.
And he was even kind enough to supply a tracklist...
1.Alex Winston - Sister Wife ( Moonlight Matters Remix )
2.Crimea X - Liubov ( Daniele Baldelli Remix )
3.Peter Visti - Be A Vise Man
4.Adele - Set Fire To The Rain ( Plastic Plates Remix )
5.Montauk - The Gum Thief
6.Pony Pony Run Run - Hey You ( Copacabana Remix )
7.B.C. x Delivery - Return To Me ( Munk Remix )
8.South West Seven - Absolute
9.Azari & III - Hungry For The Power ( Art Department Remix )
10.Shit Robot - Losing My Patience ( Unabombers Android Re-Fix )
11. Aeroplane - My Enemy ( Rex The Dog Remix )
12. Pro Logic - Stardust
James Blakes melodic, experimental, bass smash 'Limit To Your Love' has been given the treatment by Lynx, making it a liquid drum 'n' bass monster. The increased speed costs the song some of its subtlety but its more than made up for by the phenomenal sub-bass and piano, get this in your library regardless of whether you're a d'n'b fan.
I know this is the second in succession, but I'm on a roll tonight, digging the depths for new beats. Until about 3 weeks ago I hadn't heard of Guti, since then he has blown me away with his quality. I was introduced to him by his collaboration with Dubshape which Pete Tong featured on his disc of his Future Underground compilation with Riva Starr. If that wasn't high enough praise, The 2 Bears then spun it on their show on Ministry of Sound entitled Follow The Bears, which I highly recommend you check out.
Without further chat, here it is, this featured on our new Promo Mix, mashed up with a John Dahlback acapella, but this is it is in its' stripped back instrumental glory:-
The man himself then reappeared, this time on the Beatport charts, with a new song, equally fantastic, South American influenced house, perfect for a sunny day!
Firstly I'd like to thank each and everyone of you from the UK to Ukraine (we're worldwide now) for taking us to 6,000 hits, hopefully it's a continuing upward trend as the Juicy! blog brings you more of the freshest beats, mixes, clubbing news and interviews.
Secondly the Juicy! show will be airing this Friday, fresh from interviewing Sinden the previous day. We will be playing out the interview on air as well as banging out some of our biggest tunes and going in the mix live on air for the first time this year, giving you a taster of what we think is going to be filling the clubs this year, if our promo mixes weren't enough for you.
To celebrate hitting 6000 we've got a treat and a half for you, Jamie Jones on the remix of the new sultry, disco masterpiece from Azari & iii, this is a tune for after, afterhours, one of the best, yet darkest things I've heard:-
If you're a fan get down to The Liquid Rooms on May 15th for Musika to see Jamie Jones for what promises to be a phenomenal night.
And as a bonus, to celebrate Jesse Rose's announcement for Karnival on 27th August, here's a gem of his given the remix treatment by the master that is Mason:-
On Sunday 1st May, two of Edinburgh's biggest house nights combined forces to produce 11 hours of music spread across 3 different rooms. We got the absolute pleasure of being able to interview not only house music don Riva Starr but also disco mafioso The Magician, both were really top guys and the interviews turned out suprisingly well! But before them, i'm going to do a cheeky review of the whole day...
With the doors opening at 2pm, Heavy Gossip and Musika's day of rest was always going to be a marathon session of sun, house music and to my suprise, loads of hot girls (must be the house music). Just before his set at 6pm (he had to go on earlier because he was playing his Snatch! night in london which was a shame). It was weird, i walked into the office to find of the biggest names in dance just finishing a drum arrangement on his new remix which featured a 1970's cartoon cat singing about marijuana.
And this is the interview I, and then Jack later, did with Riva Starr...
Safe to say his set delivered, it was truly a lesson in how to DJ, build up a crowd and keep the energy going for 2 hours. it was strange to see that he had literally everyone in the room up on the floor going wild.
After Riva finished, Jordan Cochrane & Lawrence Nolan took over and kept the groove going. We went to catch 30 minutes of Retro/Grade's set downstairs before heading to the office again to set up for The Magician's Interview.
He arrived dressed in a full suit carrying a wand with The Magician engraved down the side, we didn't know what we had let ourselves in for. Turns out he was an absolute gent, really open about all our questions and didn't mind wasting his time chatting to a duo of wanna be DJs!
But anyway, here's the full interview with The Magician...
After the interview, we went to the the basement for his set and what would turn out to be the highlight of the evening. It is completley clichéd but i mean this in all seriousness, it was one of the best sets i've ever been at. Not only did he play some of the most underground yet ridiculousy funky disco i'll probably ever here, he had everyone going wild for the full 2 hours of his set. It was also really refreshing to step back from] 128bpm house and submerse into old school styled 120bpm disco. A few of the songs i did recognise were...
Daft Punk - Around The World (Must have been some sort of Magician disco edit)
Finally, every month releases mixes know as 'Magic Tapes' which are just a collection of his favourite 10 tunes from the month, get on it... Magic Tape Ten by TheMagician
